Tim Bray Now Works for Google

Tim Bray declined Oracle's offer, in the wake of the Oracle-Sun acquisition, to remain an employee in the newly merged Sunacle/Orasun. And has joined instead what he calls the "No-Evil Zone," a.k.a. Google.

As he succinctly expresses it, on his blog dated Monday March 15, his first day at work for Google: "The title is 'Developer Advocate'. The focus is Android. Fun is expected."

But there's also a quite detailed account of the background to this move...

Knoa Announces Product and Service Line up for Risk-Proof CRM in 2010

In 2009, many CRM projects were deferred or cancelled due to the difficult and uncertain economy, but this trend is being reversed in 2010. While at the same time, the willingness to take on risk is low, there is little room for failure in organizations that are already stressed. Forrester Research, Inc. notes, “Battered by two years of recession, buyers of customer management solutions have become extremely value conscious. With vendors like Oracle and SAP touting new releases of their CRM products, enterprises running older versions of CRM apps are mulling whether to take the upgrade plunge. In a continuing weak economy, business process professionals are wondering if the benefits of upgrading their CRM solution will outweigh the costs.”1
Knoa, a provider of End-User Experience Management software, today announced capabilities that will support both sides of the CRM value coin, for companies who are planning to upgrade their CRM applications or looking to drive more return from current investments.

PerspecSys Founder Terry Woloszyn to Present at Cloud Expo

When adopting Cloud solutions, especially Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), questions regarding data security and governance arise. Depending on your jurisdiction, you may be subject to the recently released EU Data Protection Directive. In the U.S., you may have to cope with a patchwork of disparate and overlapping regulations, as well as sector-specific requirements such as HIPPA for healthcare, or FISMA and ITAR for public sector-related organizations.

In his session at the 5th International Cloud Expo, Terry Woloszyn, Founder & CTO of PerspecSys Inc. and a thought leader in Cloud data governance, will present strategies to address data privacy, residency, and security requirements when adopting Cloud solutions. He will discuss both the technology options available as well as the functional and business value impacts of each strategy. Cloud Expo delegates will come away with a clearer understanding of the decisions surrounding SaaS adoption while remaining compliant with data governance requirements.

Taiwan ICT Industry Backgrounder

Many of Taiwan’s information and communications technology (ICT)
companies are moving up the global supply chain by building their own
brands. Taiwanese companies today account for about three-quarters of
the world’s production of PCs and half of the world’s liquid-crystal
displays (LCDs). In addition, Taiwan makes about a quarter of the
world’s semiconductors and about a fifth of the world’s mobile phones.

Is Australia Entering a China-Driven 20-Year Resources Boom? (Part 2 of 2), an Industrial Info News Alert

so low that iron ore mining companies would simply shut down production when a problem occurred, rather than spend money on repairs and maintenance. There were no major LNG projects under way: Woodside's (ASX: WPL) (Perth, Australia) fourth train in North West Australia had recently been completed, and no other LNG projects were on the horizon. About 2003, the situation began improving. Demand for commodities was on the rise, and prices began increasing. The major miners began considering the expansion of their production capacities, and significant projects were planned. By 2005, things were in full swing. BHP Billiton (NYSE:BHP) (Melbourne, Australia) had mapped out rapid-growth projects aimed at doubling the company's production output. Likewise, Rio Tinto plc (NYSE:RTP) (London, England) publicly stated that the company intended to double its output of ship-borne iron ore. The $50 billion Gorgon LNG project was in the late feasibility stage, and the question seemed to be not whether the project should proceed, but how many production trains should be built.

Southwark Council To Put Interactive Mapping At The Heart of Online Community Services With Pitney Bowes Business Insight

Stratus Connect™ Helping To Transform Online User Experience

Windsor, Berks UK, 11 March 2010 - Pitney Bowes Business Insight (PBBI) - a global provider of location intelligence, data management and customer communication management software, data and services - today announces that Southwark Council in London is using PBBI's web mapping technology Stratus Connect™ to significantly enhance the mapping services provided to citizens via the Council's website, delivering the type of seamless and intuitive user experience that online citizens have come to expect from the Web 2.0 world.

Known as Southwark Interactive Mapping, the citizen services provided via Stratus Connect can be launched through www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/maps

Southwark Council is overhauling its online mapping features in two key areas. The first is to provide a dedicated one-stop-shop interactive mapping service that enables citizens to activate overlays on top of a detailed map of the borough - for example, clicking on 'Controlled parking zones' instantly highlights the relevant areas on the map. Other overlay options include 'Schools', 'Recycling Sites', 'Planning Applications' and 'Conservation Areas'. Citizens are also able to: search for locations; browse mapping, aerial photography and historical mapping; and quickly display nearby services.

To directly view the full functionality of Southwark Interactive Mapping, go to http://maps.southwark.gov.uk/connect/southwark.jsp?tooltip=yes

The second key area for Southwark is its plans to make location and mapping functionality widely available throughout the website - for instance, the council plans to enable citizens to launch spatial searches and address look-ups from multiple service pages throughout the council website. The RIA (Rich Internet Application) controls that Stratus Connect supports via Stratus RIA Controls™ will enable individual web page managers to incorporate mapping and spatial search functionality wherever it's needed.

Stratus Connect replaces the PlanAccess solution that the Council was previously using for public access to geographic-based information, in recognition that user expectations of interactive mapping have changed enormously over the past few years. Stratus Connect enables the type of uncluttered interface and simple zoom and pan functionality that users are accustomed to from web tools such as Bing Maps and Google Maps - but importantly, Stratus Connect delivers a number of advantages over mapping services available online.

"We wanted to put mapping at the heart of the Southwark Council website, as it's a key indicator that we understand how citizens today want to interact with online environments," said Stuart Carter, Corporate GIS Manager at Southwark Council. "Stratus Connect enables us to simplify and streamline the way we present location-based information to users, removing extraneous on-screen map tools and instead providing an intuitive interface that enables people to find what they want without having to go through unnecessary steps. However, while it's clear that online tools such as Bing Maps and Google Maps have done a lot to popularise easy-access mapping, there's a number of reasons why we resisted deploying them onto the council website.

"Services such as Google Maps are fantastic for private business websites, but not so good for local government organisations that have a responsibility to build and maintain a spatial data infrastructure (SDI). For instance, you can't use Ordnance Survey (OS) MasterMap with the Google Maps API as this would breach Crown copyright, thus denying Southwark's citizens access to the level of detail provided by OS MasterMap. Moreover, if we deployed an external mapping API such as Google Maps, we'd have little control over developments within it - for example, the style of the mapping or administrative functions could change without us being consulted."

Southwark chose to work with PBBI on this project because of a longstanding relationship with the company based on its heritage as a location intelligence expert and innovator.

"PBBI is a company who we trust to provide both excellent solutions and support," added Stuart Carter. "Southwark Council's relationship with PBBI means that I can be involved in the ongoing evolution of products and provide honest and frank feedback that I know will be acted upon."

Southwark Council is overhauling its online mapping presence in tandem with a re-launch of the council website during 2010. It is hoped that the new user-friendly, location-based information on its pages will encourage citizens to interact even further with the online services that Southwark provides.

Based on the expected success of the Stratus Connect deployment, the Council is anticipating a considerable improvement in visitor numbers compared to the old PlanAccess based service.

About Stratus Connect™
Stratus Connect is designed for spatial data owners and web developers within organisations who need to share corporate data with citizens, councillors and wider stakeholders through a web-based mapping application to provide live information about the location of services in any given vicinity. Stratus Connect can be used internally or externally to promote efficiencies and cost savings with the benefit of an enhanced citizen experience and self-service capabilities.

Stratus Connect has been developed in direct response for the need to deliver next generation interactive maps on-line. Web technology has evolved to enable online mapping and provide more feature rich and compelling applications. As location intelligence moves from the single-user to the enterprise, Stratus Connect provides Web 2.0 mapping capabilities and RIA controls for enterprise mash-ups.

End.

For further information, please contact:
Sue Glanville/Joe Banks
Say Communications
+44 (0)20 8971 6400
sglanville@saycomms.co.uk
jbanks@saycomms.co.uk

About Pitney Bowes Business Insight
Pitney Bowes Business Insight (PBBI) is a division of Pitney Bowes Inc.
Although oil and gas company Sasol Limited's (NYSE:SSL) (Johannesburg) results for the six months up to the end of December 2009 reflected tough market conditions and showed operating profits down 51% to $1.4 billion, capital expenditures were listed at $880 million and growth plans were still intact said group chief executive Pat Davies.
Hydrogen Producers Continue to Buck Spending Trends, an Industrial Info News Alert

The production of hydrogen by chemical producers for sale over-the-fence to petroleum refiners has been an increasing trend for nearly a decade. Despite the pullback in major refinery investments in the past year, investment in new hydrogen capacity has remained strong with a substantial amount of new capacity currently under construction and a considerable amount of new capacity still planned. Demand from refiners has been largely driven by investments in new hydrotreater capacity or technology modifications to process heavier or sour crude from Canada and other regions.

Is Australia Entering a China-Driven 20-Year Resources Boom? (Part 1 of 2), an Industrial Info News Alert

A senior executive of the Reserve Bank of Australia has recently predicted that Australia will enjoy a China-led resources boom that will last for the next 20 years. Phillip Lowe, the assistant governor of the Reserve Bank, which is Australia's central bank, used a speech last month on global economic conditions to reveal that the Reserve Bank is very bullish about the Australian economy. In particular, Lowe felt that China was becoming increasingly reliant on Australia to supply the raw materials to make steel. Steel is the key component necessary in building China's infrastructure and fuelling the country's minimum annual growth of 8%, which China's leaders believe is required to avoid internal unrest in the country.

VEGA helps improve the UK's Security & Resilience Planning

10 March 2010 - VEGA Consulting Services Ltd (VEGA), a Finmeccanica company, has won contracts from the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) to help improve the organisations' business resilience.

VEGA, one of Europe's leading Security & Resilience consultancies, will provide independent expert advice to ensure the Business Continuity Management Systems (BCMS) of both organisations conform to best practice continuity standards, including those of the British Standards Institute (BSi). Both contracts are being delivered by VEGA's business resilience team which brings a depth of experience from across the public and private sectors.

The UK MOD and NPIA both have critical roles underpinning the UK's National Security Strategy and contingency planning. Their ability to minimise the risk to their own continuity of service therefore, has a significant impact on the UK's response to potential security threats.

Under the first contract, VEGA is supporting the UK MOD's secure Public Key Infrastructure service, which is responsible for managing the encryption keys required for ensuring secure communications across the UK MOD. The work is being carried out through the Defence Equipment & Support Information Systems and Services organisation. VEGA will be helping improve the BCMS to ensure compliance with UK MOD's standard on Business Continuity Management JSP 503, as well as to satisfy tScheme and ISO 27001 requirements.

The NPIA contract will involve VEGA providing consultancy support and guidance to enhance the current Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery Planning of the Police National Computer Service. VEGA will help formalise the structure of their plans to ensure that the BCMS fully meets the British Standard for BCM, BS25999.

VEGA Managing Director, Paul MacGregor, said: "At VEGA we are absolutely focussed on developing services that benefit those organisations with a major role in the national security of the UK. I am therefore delighted that organisations such as the UK MOD and NPIA have commissioned VEGA to help improve the resilience of their operations."

Further information
For further information, please contact Mark Gunning on mark.gunning@vega.co.uk.
